When you are all alone with no outside influence, not in Church or among some religious group, what is on your heart? What possesses your thoughts, what is your longing? What is your desire? Who do you wish to please? If you can honestly say: "the Lord" and have an unquenchable desire to learn more about him and his Word, I would say you are walking with him. Galatians 5:22-23 " But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law."
One of the main ways to know or determine if we are walking with Jesus is if we are obeying His Words, such as loving God with all our heart and loving our neighbors as we love ourselves (Matthew 22:37-39); self-denial (see Luke 9:23) and many others. These which I've mentioned are ''probably'' the essential ones, which can also be testified by people around us, if we obey them, and thus, God is glorified (see Matthew 5:16). I trust this is helpful.
My simplistic answer is this: YOU know and sense the guidance daily of His Holy Spirit that seems to speak or in your senses, you get 'that still small voice to let you know don't do this or don't do that, etc.' He told/tells us to "Trust in the Lord and acknowledge Him in all your ways(pathways), and He will direct your paths" and "bring you unto and into all righteousness" simply by obeying Him and "Trusting Him". I have been trusting in the Lord and experience His "daily direction and guidance" since I received salvation. --Thank You Lord Jesus, Amen! --Andy--
Good question, Barbara! "The one who says he remains in Him should walk just as He walked." (1 John 2:6) "We are to walk in the light 'as he is in the light' (1 John 1:7). This means that we Christians are to forgive one another 'even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you' (Eph. 4:32; cf. Colossians 3:13). "This also means that husbands should love their wives 'even as Christ also loved the church' (Eph. 5:25). Husbands should care for their wives 'even as the Lord' cares for the church (Eph. 5:29). "To walk in the light is to walk in the Spirit and not fulfill the lusts of the flesh (see Gal. 5:16)." --Warren Wiersbe
