My opinion is that Jesus did indeed include women as students (disciples). Take Mary Magdalene for instance...was she not sitting at Jesus' feet as he instructed his male disciples? At Mary and Martha's house (with Martha doing most of the cooking), Mary thought Christ's words were more important than household chores....and Jesus agreed! (Luke 10: 38-42)

Just my thoughts.

Not just male disciples, but 12 male disciples. For a first-century Jew, images of the 12 sons of Israel, later 12 tribes of Israel, flash in their memories, stirring up hope in their hearts - the establishment of the new Kingdom of Israel.
