There is so much written about this topic vis a vis this movie, and a lot of it online, that I'm surprised to see this question on here.

I did a film paper on this when the Matrix first came out in 1999... and asserted that it was a Christian themed movie veiled in modernity, and aside from the 'obvious' references:

Neo = the One = New = Jesus = Saviour
Trinity, Zion, Etc., Etc....AND the ever pervasive theme of good vs evil (the machines) and awakening to truth etc... other than these obvious tropes, there are absolutely ZERO parallels between the Matrix story and Christianity. I was very very wrong to believe that it was the Christianity story wrapped up in flash. In fact several other 'false' religions are themed/referenced/suggested/ thread throughout the film play (Hinduism, Buddhism/the Oracle, Gnostic beliefs about Christianity/the Architect, Roman mythology/(Morpheus). Cypher paralleled with Judas, Neo with Jesus, these are similar story lines, yes, but while suggestive it is not true to the story of Jesus, and salvation in this movie is from sacrifice, but awakening to truth is not the ultimate truth! It simply lacks truth in this vein.

Whereas before being saved I might have just read a review on any movie site, NOW as a Christian I would recommend this one for you:

One 16 year old Christian commented on the site that he found more and more Christian themes in the movie the more times he watched it. Be careful with that approach in accepting the 'story' in this way, because mixing in other 'truths' only makes the whole pot one big 'lie' and blinds you to the real truth of Christ and God's grace.

Blessings,
in HIM,
Lynn
