ESV - 1 Now Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian, and he led his flock to the west side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. 2 And the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush. He looked, and behold, the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed.

Stephen's address to the Sanhedrin in Acts 7 gives us a "jet tour" of Biblical history beginning with the call of Abraham through the crucifixion of our Lord. I believe your question is answered by comparing verses 23 and 30. V. 23 "And when he was full forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren the children of Israel." in v. 24 he defended an Israelite, killing an Egyptian. V. 26 starts off "The next day....." then in v. 29 we read he fled to Madian. In v. 30 we read: " And when forty years were expired, there appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sina an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire in a bush." Conclusion: Moses was approximately 40 years old when he left Egypt. (Acts 7:23) and thereafter stayed in Midian approximately 40 years. (Acts 7:30). Exodus 7:7 tells us the age of both Moses and Aaron: "And Moses was fourscore years old, and Aaron fourscore and three years old, when they spake unto Pharaoh. A very interesting side note: Remember how Moses made all sorts of excuses, pleading with the Lord not to send him to Egypt? Look especially at Exodus 4:10 " And Moses said unto the LORD, O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant: but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue." Now read Stephen's statement concerning Moses abilities in Acts 7:22 "And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds." (Moses was highly educated, a powerful speaker and an achiever, very different from the self portrait he was trying to sell the Lord!)
Moses stayed for 40 years in voluntary exile in Midian after killing an Egyptian.
