Why does it seem so easy for Christians to misuse scripture as a weapon to get their own way or make themselves look superior?

The difference is that when it's used to heal, restore, or edify another person, the truth will be spoken in love. Ephesians 4:15 We see in 1 Corinthians 13:4-13 the traits of love. Love is patient, tenderhearted, and humble. Another aspect of using the bible correctly is self examination. Matthew 7:3-5 3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? 4 Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? 5 Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye. Finally, we must examine the scripture to see if it's being twisted. 2 Peter 3:16 16 As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction. means to twist. The greek word for wrest is Streblo. It means to twist, torture. The number is 4761 in The New Strongs Expanded Dictionary of Bible Words. If these criteria are not met, then I believe the word is being used to bully or harm another. Peace Psalm 23
