1 Peter 3:18-19 says, "For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, in which He went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, because they formerly did not obey, when God's patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water."

The "spirits in prison" refers to demons who were permanently bound because of their wickedness. Between Christ's death and Resurrection He went to the demon spirits bound in the abyss and proclaimed that He had triumphed over them (Col. 2:15 says, "He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in Him."). The demons in Noah's day filled the earth with their wickedness, including sexual sin (see Genesis 6, then go on youtube.com and look up Nephilim skeletons; they are gigantic), and they were permanently bound in the abyss until the day of their final sentencing.

My personal belief is that the purpose of Holy Saturday was Jesus' mission to conquer Death as well as Sin, which He had overcome on the Cross. Paul's eloquent cry, "Oh Death, where is thy sting, oh Grave, thy victory?" speaks to that purpose, 1 Cor. 15:55. Also, in the Apostles Creed we declare "He descended into Hell" which is where the dead from Adam through Noah were held Captive. "Hell" or Hades was understood as the place of the dead, as well as fallen Spirits or Angels. 1 Peter 3:19-20 & 2 Peter:4&5. But for all spirits and mankind, whether living or dead in the past or in the future, He goes to overcome death and proclaim that He has been given the Keys to Hell and Death Rev. 1 :18. "God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16.

Matthew 12:38-40 "...Then some of the scribes and Pharisees spoke up. Master, they said, we should like to see a sign from you. He replied, It is an evil and unfaithful generation that asks for a sign! The only sign it will be given is the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah remained in the belly of the sea monster for three days and three nights, so will the Son of man be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights."

Luke 16:19-26 The parable of the rich man and Lazarus. "There was a rich man...at his gate...lie a poor man...The poor man died and was carried away by angels...into Abraham's embrace.....(Lazarus) The rich man died and was buried. In his torment in Hades, he looked up and saw Abraham a long way off. Father Abraham, pity me...I am in agony... Abraham replied,...remember your fill of good things during your life...Lazarus his fill of bad...Now he is being comforted, you are in agony....between us there is a great gulf...fixed...."

John 3:13. " No one has gone up to heaven except the one who came down from heaven, the Son of man..."

Ephesians 4:8-10 "That is why it says: He went up to the heights, took captives, he gave gifts to humanity. When it says He went up, it must mean that He went down to the deepest levels of the earth. The One who went down is none other than the One who went up above all the heavens to fill all things."

Luke 23:43"He answered him, In truth I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise."

1 Corinthians15:20,21 "...Christ has been raised from the dead, as the fIrst fruits of all who have fallen asleep..As by a man came death, so through one has come...resurrection from the dead."

Isaiah 66:24 "And on their way out they will see the corpses of those who rebelled against me...."

Jesus went to take the believers, old testament saints to paradise, heaven.
Abraham and the others went with Him to heaven. The unbelievers await in Hades, for the final judgement at the completion of the age of grace. The Kingdom, the New heaven and the New earth spoken of in The Revelation Of John.

The Bible does not leave us to guess where Jesus was when he died.

"Brethren, I may say unto you freely of the patriarch David, that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us unto this day. Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins he would set [one] upon his throne; he foreseeing [this] spake of the resurrection of the Christ, that neither was he left unto Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. This Jesus did God raise up, whereof we all are witnesses" (Acts 2:29-32 ASV).

"For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the whale; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth"(Matthew 12:40 ASV).

"And Jesus, crying with a loud voice, said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said this, he gave up the ghost" (Luke 23:46 ASV).

Clearly, Jesus went to the grave when he died. And the Bible teach us that Jesus was dead for three days but God resurrected him on the third day.

What does the Bible teach about the dead?

"The dead praise not the LORD, neither any that go down into silence. (Psalm 115:17 KJV).

" For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten (Ecclesiastes 9:5 KJV).

"Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest."(Ecclesiastes 9:10 KJV).

The New Testament teachers, in 1 Peter 3:18-19,

"18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:

19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;"

Our bodies are alive because they have a spirit in them. When a person dies, the spirit leaves the body which decays until the resurrection, but the spirit has to go somewhere. The righteous spirits go to paradise (as Jesus alludes to in Luke 23:42-43 (note the timeframe of "to day." This "paradise" is not talking about the eventual Heaven which will be inherited by the righteous after the resurrection---this is place where spirits of the righteous temporarily reside until the resurrection.)), and the wicked spirits go to spirit prison (as mentioned in 1 Pet. 3:19) to await resurrection and the final judgement of the Lord. So when Jesus went to the spirit prison to preach to those spirits, he was helping them learn what they missed out on on earth, as explained by Peter in 1 Peter 4:6.

In summary, in character with His nature, Christ was helping and serving those who had passed on who had not received His gospel while on earth, preaching to them that they might "live according to God in the spirit" (1 Peter 4:6).
