Earlier in Mark's gospel, the apostles had seen Jesus perform multiple miraculous acts of healing. These testimonies to Jesus' identity as God incarnate, and to His supernatural powers, should have instilled faith in the apostles with regard to Jesus' ability to address any situation that might confront them.

However, as noted in Mark 4:35-41, when the apostles were caught in a severe storm while sailing on the Sea of Galilee that Jesus was not immediately available to personally address because of being asleep, the apostles questioned Jesus' concern for them, and His control over the situation.

They thus indicated by their actions that, in spite of all the proofs that they had seen, they did not yet have sufficient faith to believe that the storm would not overwhelm them, simply because Jesus was with them, even if he was asleep at the time.

[My personal opinion is that, even if the apostles had not wakened Jesus, they themselves (if they had had the kind of faith that Jesus wanted them to have) could have stilled the storm (as Jesus did) by speaking to it in Jesus' name.]

The situation brings to mind the numerous occasions during the exodus from Egypt when the Israelites, despite the many miraculous acts of God they had witnessed that had freed them from bondage, and that had provided for their needs in the wilderness, continued to doubt God and His ability to care for them.

The pupils had bombed their test since they needed otherworldly understanding and responsive hearts. The supernatural occurrence of the portions and fishes had established no enduring connection with them. All things considered, in the event that Jesus could increase food and feed a huge number of individuals, at that point without a doubt He could secure them in the tempest. Indeed, even a pupil of Jesus Christ can build up a hard heart on the off chance that he neglects to react to the profound exercises that must be educated throughout life and service.
