Why does it feel sometimes that God is so far away?

How can I respond to this feeling? Are there scriptures that address it or offer encouragement?

I think most of us have felt this at times, but James 4:8 has the answer:
'Come near to God and he will come near to you.' He continues, 'Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.' which indicates the reason we feel far from God is due to sin, impurity in our hearts or 'double-mindedness' which James speaks about earlier in his epistle. ' But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.' (James 1: 6 - 8)

We need to examine our lives, our hearts, our motives and let the Holy Spirit show us what it is that is keeping us from feeling His presence. He will, if we ask Him. Then we have to come in repentance and faith to Him, not doubting that He will come near to us. Hope this helps.
