To provide you with an answer to your question, it’s crucial to comprehend the words spoken by the Lord to Abraham. The Apostle elaborates on this matter in great detail.

Galatians 3:16: “Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, 'And to seeds,' as of many; but as of one, 'And to thy seed,' which is Christ. And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ.”

We observe that the promises were made to Abraham and Christ, not to those born after the flesh. The promise that the Lord made to Abraham and to Christ was for an everlasting possession. It is written that if Abraham had truly comprehended this, he would not have sought a place here on this earth. By not fully understanding, he traveled in the land of promise searching for it. This action alone showed Abraham believed God.

As the Apostle explained, the Lord was referring to a heavenly realm, signifying that it existed beyond the confines of this world and was destined for the future. Remember, the Lord told Abraham it was for an everlasting possession. 

Let’s read Hebrews chapter 11 and see what we are told of the place God was referring to.

Hebrews 11:8: “By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God."

Then the Apostle wrote the following in Hebrews 11:15: “But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.”

Now, why didn’t the children of Abraham comprehend this during the time of Christ? Because they believed they were God’s children because they were Abraham’s seed by birthright. However, God’s reference was to Christ and all those in Christ, not to them.

When confronted with this very thing, they proclaimed they were to inherit the promises based on birthright. Read the following what is written within the scriptures, John 8:38, and see how Christ explains to them that they were the children of the devil and not the children of God.

John 8:39: “They answered and said unto him, 'Abraham is our father.' Jesus saith unto them, 'If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham. But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham. Ye do the deeds of your father.' Then said they to him, 'We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.' Jesus said unto them, 'If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me. Why do ye not understand my speech? Even because ye cannot hear my word. Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not. Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me? He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.'”

Even today, this misconception persists. The seed of Abraham is Christ. All those descended from Abraham and those who adhere to the promises made to Abraham are the children of God by faith, not by birthright. Nevertheless, those in Christ today become heirs to the promises made because the promises were made in them through Christ.
