I find that the New International Version translation of the verse in question clarifies this issue by wording it as follows: "Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us". The power in question is thus not some indefinite force, or a power that is present through our own efforts, but the presence of God Himself (in the person of the Holy Spirit) indwelling each believer, which Jesus promised His followers (John 14:26).

The Holy Spirit is present in Christians (as Paul said in 2 Corinthians 1:22) as a "down payment" or guarantee from God of the eternal life that they have received from God as a result of faith in Christ, and as a foretaste or preview of eternity, when they will be continually in God's presence.

The presence of the Holy Spirit within Christians enables them to perform acts that are pleasing to God (which they could not do in their unsaved state); to continually grow in their faith and knowledge of God, in order to progressively become more Christlike throughout their earthly lives; and to assist them in being a witness of their faith to others, both in active evangelizing, and by the example of their conduct and demeanor in their day-to-day lives.

We are taught to study to show thyself approved into God. By studying his word it empowers us to know more about what God expects out of us and how to bring others to him. That is power that works within us.
