What is a Coney?

I assume it has nothing to do with "Coney Island!"

Leviticus 11:5

KJV - 5 And the coney, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you.

A "Coney" is a pika or rabbit. Some translations have it as a "Hyrax", which is a small herbivorous mammal. Some translations say it is a "Rock Badger".

It's a rabbit! Haven't you ever seen Lord of the Rings where Gollum goes and gets Sam a pair of Coneys that he takes and cooks em up in a stew! Well, he cooks one of them anyway...

If I remember correctly, a 'coney' is a rabbit or hare.

Actually, "Coney Island" does draw its name from it's fuzzy little inhabitants.
