Just some background the Old Testament or Hebrew Bible was mentioned by Jesus as recorded in Luke 24:44, as the law of Moses and the prophets and the psalms or writings concerning Him. The New Testament is based on subject categories. First, comes the historical books--the gospels and Acts. Then come the epistles--those of Paul, then those written by other writers. Revelation is a book on its own coming at the end. It seems from church history the early church usually grouped the gospels first with Matthew then Mark or Luke and John after came the Pauline epistles to churches then his personal letters. It seems they arranged the epistles according to size and length not the dates they were written. The personal letters and general epistles of the other writers appear to follow that arrangement also. It seems that Jerome a Catholic theologian used this present day order when he wrote his Latin Vulgate translation between A.D. 382 and A.D. 405 and most other translations in different languages followed this order.
