Chris, it would definitely be best if you gave us a little more information. For instance, in what way does she talk down to you and why? How old are you? Do you live with your parents? As general advice however, it is important to remember that the exact wording of the Commandment is to "honour thy father and mother." We can honour our parents while still disagreeing with them, and we certainly do not have to submit to an abusive relationship. If your mum is constantly tearing you down for no good reason, then it is in you and your mum's best interests to politely make it clear to her that just because she has authority does not mean that she can abuse that authority. On the other hand, if this is an isolated incident, you can respect her authority best by simply passing it off - after all, we all sin.
