I would say that the anointing of the Holy Spirit is the designation or dedication of a Christian for a specific purpose or mission that God intends for the person to perform or accomplish, similar to what occurred with Paul and Barnabas in Acts 13:2. To equip the person for that mission, he or she is endowed by the Holy Spirit with one or more of the gifts outlined by Paul in 1 Corinthians 12:8-11 (wisdom; knowledge; faith; healing; miracles; prophecy; distinguishing between spirits; speaking in tongues; the interpretation of tongues). (As Paul notes in 1 Corinthians 12:7, these gifts are given not for the individual alone, but so that the separate gifts with which the various individuals within the community of believers are endowed may be used for the benefit of all.) The person's conduct in the performance of his mission is then characterized by the fruits of the Holy Spirit, as enumerated in Galatians 5:22-23 (love; joy; peace; patience; kindness; goodness; faithfulness; gentleness; self-control).
