In Luke 22, Jesus took bread, broke it and said, "This is my body."

The rites for the First Communion, prepares a child for this central truth - that Christ is present today, that we can SEE Christ, TOUCH Christ, EAT Christ, that through the Eucharist, we come into communion with Christ, that we become what we eat. 

And the children, in response, will affirm this truth with their first resounding AMEN.
