We learn in Mark 15:40 that this Mary was the mother of the apostle, James the Younger and Joses, and Salome was the mother of the apostles, John and James.
My understanding is that the "James" referred to in the question was the apostle of Jesus who is commonly referred to as "James the Less", "James the Younger" (Mark 15:40), or "James, the son of Alphaeus" (Matthew 10:3), in order to distinguish him from James, the son of Zebedee and the brother of John. Aside from being mentioned as the mother of James and also of another son named Joses (Mark 15:40)(or Joseph (Matthew 27:56)), Mary is noted as having followed Jesus from Galilee into Judea; having been among those who ministered to Jesus and the apostles (possibly suggesting that she was a woman of some means); and also having been present at Jesus' crucifixion (Matthew 27:55-56; Mark 15:47), as well as having gone to Jesus' tomb early on Easter Sunday morning to anoint Jesus' body with spices (as noted by the verse cited in the question).
