As noted in the question, no one is righteous in an unsaved state. What allows humans to spend eternity in God's presence after their earthly lives are over is not their own imperfect actions, but faith in the perfect righteousness of Jesus, and in His death and resurrection as the satisfaction of the judgment for one's own sins that is acceptable in God's eyes. When God views Christians who have placed their faith in Christ for the forgiveness of their sins, He does not see their sin or count their sin against them, but instead sees Christ and His holiness (2 Corinthians 5:21). It is that imputed holiness that allows humans to be and remain in God's presence. Even while still remaining sinners on earth, Christians receive the Holy Spirit dwelling within them as the guarantee of their future assurance of being with God for eternity, when their old, sinful nature will no longer exist (Ephesians 1:13-14).
