Why were the people afraid when Jesus was performing miracles in Luke?

Luke 8:35

NASB - 35 The people went out to see what had happened; and they came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting down at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind; and they became frightened.

The people of that region were evidently not Jews (as indicated by the fact that they kept herds of swine (Luke 8:32-33)), so they may have had no appreciation of Jesus' identity as the prophesied Messiah.

Therefore, their reaction to Jesus' healing of the demoniac (Luke 8:26-33) by asking Jesus to leave was perhaps a combination of fear of the powers that Jesus had exhibited -- which they (as the Pharisees would later in Luke 11:15) may have attributed to Jesus Himself deriving His power from demonic sources -- and the economic loss that they had incurred due to the nearby herd of swine having drowned themselves after they were possessed by the demons that had plagued the man whom Jesus had healed.
