I would say that the events in the book of Joshua are meant for Christians to see the similarity between the way in which Joshua led the Israelites into the Promised Land of Canaan (in which God took an active part and fought on Israel's behalf, as indicated in passages such as Joshua 3:14-17, and Joshua 5:13-15), and the way in which Jesus is the Captain of our salvation, who is similarly leading His followers into the Promised Land of eternity in God's presence. However, unlike Joshua, who was unable to complete the possession of the Promised Land during his lifetime, Jesus has won a complete victory, and has accomplished all that is needed for our salvation through faith in His finished work. We should also learn from book of Joshua to involve God and His Word in every aspect of our lives in order to avoid being deceived as Joshua and the Israelites were by the Gibeonites, with whom they made a peace treaty (without consulting God, and contrary to God's instructions), based on the Gibeonites' false story regarding who they were (Joshua 9:3-27).
