The passage that came immediately to mind when reading the question was Acts 4:32-37, which indicates that members of the early church freely and willingly shared everything in common by selling their possessions (including lands and houses), and giving the entire proceeds from the sales to the apostles for distribution to any one who was in need. That this was a fact is further emphasized by Acts 5:1-11, which recounts how Ananias and Sapphira were struck dead by God for their self-centered deceit in keeping part of their proceeds back, but representing what they gave to the apostles as the entire amount. Selfless serving was also demonstrated by those (beginning with Stephen in Acts 6-7), who willingly gave up their lives for their Christian service and testimony.
