What does "chief" mean in the context of this passage about Esau’s sons?



      

Genesis 36:15

NKJV - 15 These were the chiefs of the sons of Esau. The sons of Eliphaz, the firstborn son of Esau, were Chief Teman, Chief Omar, Chief Zepho, Chief Kenaz.

To me, the term "chief" indicates that the individuals with that title were the heads of the various clans who were descended from Esau's sons, which I would interpret to be a reflection of birth order (similar to a prince), rather than an appointed or "elected" position. Each of these individuals would also have been the commander of the military force composed of individuals from the clan over which he was chief.
