Following His death on the cross, Jesus subsequently rose bodily from the grave (Luke 24). In His resurrected state, He is no longer subject to death, but is alive eternally.

Similarly, although those who place their faith in Him for their own eternal life continue to die temporally, that death does not end their existence. Because of their faith, they, too, have defeated death, and they will live forever in God's presence after their earthly life is over (Philippians 1:23).

Satan planned for Christ's death and burial to end the effect Jesus was having. His death and the grave didn't end anything, but his resurrection was just the start of the early church's explosion in numbers, geography, and reach (no longer was the message only for the Jews.) So through his resurrection, he defeated the effect you would expect his death and the grave to have.

What does it mean that Jesus Christ defeated death and the grave?

Interestingly, there were several resurrections recorded in the Bible, but these persons, even though they were resurrected from death back to life on earth again, still died further on in their lives.

However, Jesus defeated death by being resurrected to life in heaven and to never die again. An explanation is given below.

Note these bible examples of a resurrection:

There are nine resurrections described in the Bible, eight of them to life on earth. For those who grieve the loss of a loved one, each account offers comfort and hope for the future.

1Ki 17:17-24—The prophet Elijah resurrects a widow's son in Zarephath, a town in Sidon

2Ki 4:32-37—The prophet Elisha resurrects a boy in the town of Shunem and restores him to his parents

2Ki 13:20, 21—A man who recently died is resurrected when his corpse touches the bones of Elisha the prophet

Lu 7:11-15—At the city of Nain, Jesus interrupts a funeral procession to resurrect the son of a widow

Lu 8:41, 42, 49-56—Jesus resurrects the young daughter of Jairus, an officer of the synagogue

Joh 11:38-44—Jesus resurrects his dear friend Lazarus, restoring him to his sisters, Martha and Mary

Ac 9:36-42—The apostle Peter resurrects Dorcas, a beloved Christian known for her kind deeds

Ac 20:7-12—The apostle Paul resurrects a young man named Eutychus, who died after falling from a window

Jesus Christ is resurrected to life as an immortal spirit person, which guarantees all our hopes for the future.

The ninth resurrection, being Jesus himself, was different from those eight listed.

Jesus' physical resurrection from the grave on the third day was the ultimate proof that God accepted his sacrifice and that death's power was broken. Unlike others who were raised from the dead (e.g., Lazarus), Jesus was raised never to die again, demonstrating permanent victory over death.

Jesus Christ's defeat of death and the grave means that through his resurrection, he broke the power of sin (the cause of death) and the permanence of physical and spiritual death, offering the promise of eternal life and resurrection to all who believe in him.

The resurrection of Jesus is the ultimate guarantee of the validity of the resurrection hope. So we, too, have a firm basis for trusting implicitly in the power and love of God.

The resurrection of Jesus Christ is key to our hope for our dead loved ones. It was part of "the good news" that Paul declared to the Corinthians. (1 Cor. 15:1, 2) In fact, he said that if a Christian lacked Belief in that resurrection, his faith would be useless. (1 Cor. 15:17) Belief in the resurrection of Jesus is central to our Christian hope.

Jesus's conquest of death means that we no longer have to fear death. Jesus said of Himself in John 11:25, "I am the resurrection and the life..." The true life and power of Christ Jesus abolished the rule and power of death. "... our Saviour Jesus Christ, who has abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel" (2 Timothy 1:10).

Jesus alone conquered death, and only Jesus can offer eternal life to those who put their faith in Him!
