Because there are a variety of denominational positions on Masonic activities, I would say that it would be difficult to generalize among all Christians with respect to the permissibility or impermissibility of participating in them. However, by my understanding, there are multiple denominations that formally regard membership or participation in Masonic activities as incompatible with their denominational beliefs. These denominations include:

Assemblies of God
Church of the Brethren
Church of the Nazarene
Evangelical Lutheran Synod
Lutheran Church (Missouri Synod)
Orthodox Presbyterian Church
Presbyterian Church in America
Roman Catholicism
The Society of Friends (Quakers)

Objections raised against Freemasonry have included the following:

It is a separate religion.
It involves and promotes idolatry.
It promotes universalism (the belief that all humans will be saved).
It promotes a works-based view of salvation.
Its secrecy is antithetical to Christian fellowship.
It promotes a false claim about the name of God.
It omits the name of Jesus when citing Biblical texts in its rituals.
It promotes pagan and occultic texts and doctrines.

The Masonic Lodge and the Eastern Star are not religions. They are fraternal organizations no one questions like the Elks and Rotary Clubs. You must believe in a Supreme Being and a Bible is present in every meeting. Ignorance and jealous preachers are the reason these organizations get a bad reputation. There is a bunch of charity work completed by both organizations. There is a sense of community as well. As a member you are held accountable to certain standards of behavior.
