NKJV - 3 Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned, was remorseful and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders.

My understanding is that the phrase "pieces of silver" would have been referring to the unit of currency known as a shekel, which (as far as I can determine) would have been worth less than a dollar in today's currency. The amount that was paid to Judas (thirty shekels) is referenced elsewhere in the Bible (Exodus 21:32) as the compensation paid by the owner of an ox to the owner of a slave who was killed as a result of being gored by the ox. It was also mentioned by Zechariah (Zechariah 11:4-14) in connection with a specific prophecy of the use of the money that was paid to Judas to buy the potter's field (as fulfilled in Matthew 27:6-8).
