In my speculative opinion, the timing of the Flood was both a judgment against the wickedness on earth at that time, and also a necessary measure (in God's omniscience and also ultimate mercy) for the fulfillment of prophecies that had already been made (as early as Genesis 3:15) concerning the future coming of the Messiah. If the evil of that time had been allowed to propagate unchecked, it might have disrupted through human free-will actions the perfect timing and chain of events leading to the birth of Jesus; His sacrificial atoning death and subsequent resurrection; and the possibility of the redemption of all of humanity through faith in Him.
