By my understanding, this word means a nail or claw, applying specifically to an appendage of that nature belonging to the creature known as a strombus or wing-shell, which is a shellfish or univalve found in the Red Sea. When burned, this appendage produces an odor similar to that of castoreum, which is a yellowish exudate produced by beavers, and which they use as a scent in marking their territories. When combined with other ingredients, it can produce a sweet smell similar to vanilla.
