The gift of the Holy Spirit to which Peter was referring would not be the "gifts" of the Holy Spirit enumerated by Paul in 1 Corinthians 12 (that is, the special talents or abilities that are granted to believers to maximize their service to God), but the fact that, whenever an individual places faith in Christ for salvation and eternal life, he or she becomes indwelt by God the Holy Spirit as an "earnest" (that is a deposit or down payment, as characterized by Paul in Ephesians 1:14) of the redemption and salvation that will be fully realized or attained by each believer in the age to come. After that indwelling occurs, the Holy Spirit then allocates the spiritual gifts mentioned by Paul according to His omniscient plan for each believer's life and service to God.
