I would say that this expression is based on Jesus' statement to Nicodemus in John 3:3 that no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again. By this, He was referring to the saving spiritual rebirth that people can experience by placing their faith in Christ (rather than in their own merit) to receive forgiveness of sins from God, the indwelling of God the Holy Spirit, and eternal life in God's presence after their temporal lives on earth have ended. The end of their earthly lives is thus the only death that they will experience. Those who do not avail themselves of this spiritual rebirth through faith in Christ during their earthly lives will also undergo a temporal death at the end of their earthly lives, but will then in addition be subjected to a "second death" through eternal separation from God as the consequence of not receiving forgiveness from God for the sins that they committed their sin during their lives, which only faith in Christ can obtain. (This second death is referenced in Revelation 21:8.)
