I would say that the main characteristic that would be present in the case of a husband who loves his wife as Christ loves the church would be service or sacrifice in the sense of unselfishly placing her needs and welfare above his own -- even to the point of forfeiting his own life (if necessary) to save or preserve hers -- just as (as Jesus said in Matthew 20:28 and Mark 10:45) He came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.

Adam loved his wife enough to die for her...he ate of the fruit.
Jesus loved His bride, the church, enough to die for her.
God’s examples to us! Love, provide, and protect her to the death.

(1) A Sacrificial Love

Would the husband live sacrificially for his wife? Will he die to himself and his self-interest to put his wife first?

Cross-reference Eph 5:25 with 1 Pe 1:18-19.

(2) A Serving Love

Mark 10:45 says, “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

The husband is to serve his wife, with Jesus as his example.
(Jesus is not too busy checking his phone, scrolling through social media, when we are trying to talk to him.)
Jesus is attentive and sympathetic (Heb. 4:15-16), and the husband is to follow suit with his wife.

(3) A Sanctifying Love

The Christian husband directs his love toward his wife’s godliness. This love then will show itself in such matters as conversation, family devotions, prayer, church attendance, church participation, service, and the overall tone of the home. --Erik Raymond

Admittedly, I feel I have failed in this and consequently not fulfilled my charge from the Lord. I know I should take the lead in pointing my family, and especially my beloved wife, to the Word of God and the God of the Word. Pray for me in this regard, please.
