What may seem obvious to us if we have come to faith in Christ may not be so clear to those outside the faith. Some may even wonder if it’s true that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
Romans 3:9 - 20
ESV - 9 What then? Are we Jews any better off? No, not at all. For we have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin. 10 As it is written: "None is righteous, no, not one.

First John 1:8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. First John 1:10. If we say we have no sin, we call God a liar. We are all sinners to a degree because we can not be made perfect in the flesh. Only in the Spirit. Romans 4:5-8 But to him that worketh not, but BELIEVETH on Him who justifieth the ungodly, his FAITH is counted for righteousness. We have to be as righteous as God to go to heaven and no one is. Blessed is the man to whom the Lord imputeth righteousness APART FROM WORKS. Blessed is the man whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin. His one blood sacrifice paid our sin debt in full. John 3:18 Believers can no longer be condemned. John 6:40. We can still be chastened by the Lord as His children, but God can not go back on His word. John 6:47. We can lose our life early, and the rewards we could have had in heaven, but not eternal life. First Corinthians 3:11-15. We are saved by faith alone in Jesus alone apart from works for the free gift of eternal life. Gods word and He can not lie. Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, and we all sin, First John 1:8, and we all die. Physical death. But the GIFT of God is eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. The GIFT of God is eternal life. Not a reward for good behavior, but a free gift. Paid in full by the GIVER. John 3:18. It is not temporary life, or probationary life, but eternal life. Since it is a free GIFT from God, we have nothing to boast in. Romans 3:26-28 For He is the just and the justifier of them that believe in Jesus. Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? By the law of works? Nay, but by the law of FAITH. Therefore we conclude a man is justified by FAITH apart from the deeds of the law. Galatians 2:21. I do not void the grace of God, for if righteousness come by the law then Christ died in vain. We can do nothing to save ourselves. We can only be saved by what He did for us plus nothing. Nothing else could atone for all our sin debt except what HE did for us.
Let’s face it, friends, all men are sinners. 1. Isaiah 53:6 says, “All of us had wandered off like sheep; each of us had strayed off on his own path, but the LORD caused the sin of all of us to attack him.” (NET) 2. Romans 3:23 (All have fallen) -- The need for salvation is brought out in Romans 3:23: It is desperately needed, for all have sinned and fallen short of God's glory. HW “ All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (NET Bible) 3. Ephesians 2:1-2 1 "And although you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2 in which you formerly lived according to this world's present path, according to the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the ruler of the spirit that is now energizing the sons of disobedience," These first 2 verses, especially, explain what we once were before salvation (Ephesians 2:1-3, 11-12): A. Dead in sin (Eph 2:1) – “dead in your transgressions and sins” B. Influenced by Satan (Eph 2:2) C. Controlled by lust (Eph 2:3a) This was me B.C. (Before Christ) – Before Christ saved me. D. Under God's wrath (Eph 2:3b) -- 3 “Among them [the sons of disobedience] we too all previously lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the rest.” (2:3 NASB) but now I'm under new management: God's! E. Pagans without God (Eph 2:11) A friend of mine @ work has a wife who admits she’s one. F. Separated from Christ (Eph 2:12a): 12 “That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:” KJV G. Without hope in this present world (Eph 2:12b): 12 “That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:” KJV HW Those who brag that they haven’t sinned should take heed to: 1Co 10:12: “So let the one who thinks he is standing be careful that he does not fall.” (NET)
Is it true that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God? Yes! I faced this question many times, even sometimes pointing to the case of an infant or newborn baby. How can you call the baby a sinner? For understanding the answer, we can ask this question another way: Is it true that we all die? Yes, we all die. Many believe that “death” is a part of our life cycle. Yes it is, but this death is an “event” introduced in humans just after Adam and Eve committed sin. Originally, we were created without that “event”. If we were not sinners, we would never die, and death would stop just after the death of Adam and Eve. So, as successors of Adam and Eve we will have to face death. In other words, the successors of Adam and Eve are all sinners.
