The phrases “fear God” and “fear of the Lord” appear many times in the Old Testament. To “fear” God means to have the awe and respect and reverence for who God is (his nature and character) and what he has done (recorded in the bible) and in our lives (our salvation testimony). When the focus of our lives is God-centred, the Holy Spirit will fill us with these thoughts and feelings towards God. The book of Proverbs says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” Godly wisdom is simply seeing our life from God’s perspective. We will learn to reverence what is important to God. We will notice acts of justice, righteousness, love and faithfulness which will overflow into our thanksgiving to God, showing reverence for what God is accomplishing in the lives of other people, not only Christians but all people.
