Ten of the twelve men (all except Joshua and Caleb) that Moses sent to spy out the land thought that the Israelites had reason to fear the inhabitants of the land because of the inhabitants' powerful nature and large size, as well as their fortified cities. Joshua and Caleb had noted the same things, but had faith (which the rest of the spies lacked) that God would enable the Israelites to overcome those challenges. (As a result, they were the only Israelite adults who were eventually allowed to enter Canaan. The other ten spies were slain by God immediately (Numbers 14:36-38), and all the other Israelite adults died during the subsequent forty years of wandering imposed by God as a punishment for the Israelites' lack of faith in Him (Numbers 14:29-35).)
