It is likely (but by no means certain) that since Jesus had told the Pharisees that the one without sin should cast the first stone, he may have been writing their names in the dirt since he knew their hearts. It may also be possible that he was quoting other scripture.

John 8:6: This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not.

In the Law of Moses, both who committed adultery had to be put to death, but now only the woman was brought to Jesus, but they didn’t bring the man to be accused, for he also had to be stoned to death by law. (Lev 20:10) Being caught in adultery by a witness, he had the right to be the first one to put her to death, but there was none without sin. (Deut 17:7) When Jesus lifted himself, he saw none but the woman and said to her, “Neither do I condemn thee; go and sin no more.”

Everything that was written in the Old Testament was the shadow of the new, as Jesus said, “Think not that I have come to destroy the law or the prophets, I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.” (Mat 5:17) The dust of the ground from which man was created and breathed upon to become a living soul, Jesus by writing on the ground made them understand through their living soul how sinful they were, for any man who had not sinned was to be the first one to throw a stone at the woman. He never argued with the Pharisees or scribes; he would quote the scriptures, as the Word of God is sharper than a two-edged sword.

Very often we tend to have the righteousness of a Pharisee or a scribe (Mat 5;20) not looking at the size of the plank in our eyes (Mat 7:5). We struggle with sin, and yet we don’t come to the Lord, we depart from him. The scriptures say very clearly to acknowledge your sins, humble yourself, and come to the fountain of living water, just as Zacchaeus did when he was called. (Luke 19:8) Let’s not depart from the Lord, for he is the fountain of living water that gives life.

Jeremiah 17:13: O LORD, the hope of Israel, all that forsake thee shall be ashamed, and they that depart from me shall be written in the earth, because they have forsaken the LORD, the fountain of living waters.
