Jesus' death (through the shedding of His blood) paid the penalty for humanity's sin, but that atoning death would not have achieved its purpose if He had not subsequently risen bodily from the dead. Humanity would still have no means of having its cumulative sin forgiven. 

Paul made this point emphatically in 1 Corinthians 15:12-32.
