How was a large family a sign of God's blessing? (Psalm 127:3-5)
Psalms 127:1 - 5
ESV - 1 Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain. 2 It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep.

To me, in the time and culture in which the cited verses in Psalm 127 were written, a large family was a particular sign of God's blessing as an indication of having escaped the factors such as disease that commonly contributed to a reduced life span, as well as having present help in performing the arduous tasks associated with earning a living and maintaining a household, and having greater assurance of continuation of the family name, legacy, and influence through descendants. While children (in whatever number) are still commonly regarded as a blessing today, I would say that there are generally not those same factors present that would gravitate in favor of having as many of them as possible out of necessity.
