In my opinion, Jesus was referring both to His coming resurrection, and to the abiding presence of God the Holy Spirit after Jesus' return to God the Father.

I have to connect this verse, John 14:18, with the next verse where Jesus said, 19 "In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me; because I live, you also will live." We can live through the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit. Both verses are in the same paragraph.

Yes, "It may well be that another Johannine double meaning is found here, so that Jesus ‘returns’ to his disciples in one sense in his appearances to them after his resurrection, but in another sense he ‘returns’ in the person of the Holy Spirit to indwell them." --bible.org

I agree with that part of the answer that Mr. Maas mentioned.

Application:

… Because He lives, I can face tomorrow,
Because He lives, all fear is gone;
Because I know He holds the future,
And life is worth the living,
Just because He lives!
