Commentaries that I have seen tend to assign an early date to James' epistle -- perhaps even an earlier date than any other book in the New Testament, in the range of AD 45-48. This is based on its lack of any reference to the existence of Gentile converts to Christianity, or of the controversy about their admission to the Church that led to the Council at Jerusalem in AD 50 that is recounted in Acts 15.
