This strange test was actually to her benefit. Without it, she would simply be declared guilty. But with it, if she's innocent, the man is shamed. This has the effect of making a suspicious husband think twice before accusing his wife. As for why there was no similar test for husbands, they wouldn't suffer much socially and could take care of themselves if their marriage failed. We should keep in mind that social inequalities, including slavery, were never God's intention, but his way was not to suddenly upend society. God is patient and only puts limits on such things, with the intent that in time people will give up these inequalities. That's what's intended for the Body of Christ, though people still fall short.
