On multiple occasions in the gospels (particularly during the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 6), Jesus contrasted the reward (both in this world and the next) that the faithful would receive from God with the fleeting, transient nature of the recognition from men that would be received by hypocrites who strove to make a public show of their praying, fasting, and giving. As I see it, Peter subsequently made this same point in the cited chapter in urging believers to be examples of submission and faithful service.
