I would interpret the cited phrase as indicating that Christ (as the Son of God) would have had the power to escape crucifixion, but instead voluntarily chose to sacrifice His life to make possible the redemption of humanity. By not exercising His power as true God, He was instead displaying His weakness as true man by allowing Himself to be put to death. But it was then subsequently through God's power that He rose from the dead to live eternally.
