Dear Anonymous, in my opinion, it is not wrong to save money for our future, unless it is a matter of greed!

In Luke 12:13-21, Jesus is revealing the heart of mankind. In verse 15 it reads: And He said to them, "Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses."

In Matthew 6:19-21, Jesus sums it up by saying, "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."

I would like to draw your attention back to Luke 12:16-21, where Jesus begins to share the parable about a certain rich man. Jesus called him a fool, because he was so consumed by his riches, the here and now, but lacked concern about his soul, the hereafter!

This man was so concerned about himself (selfishness) that he failed in being rich towards others. Hence, Jesus said in verse 21, "So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God."

We are blessed when we consider the poor; that's what it means to be rich towards God. God doesn't need our money; however, it is His will that we share our resources with the poor and needy!

Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matt, 6:19-21 NKJV

The keyword is "yourselves." If we are saving "treasures" for the purpose of helping others, then it is allowed.

It is righteous to forgo company-sponsored pensions, 401Ks, Simple IRAs, etc., as a good work of persevering through trials of faith.

Social security is a government mandate and not a choice for the individual; therefore it isn't sinful to accept social security checks.
