In what ways can you rely on God as your "shield" today?

Discuss this Psalms 18:2

The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,
my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge,
my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.

I.e., how is He your refuge?

Psalms 18:1 - 50

ESV - 1 I love you, O Lord, my strength. 2 The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.

Dear Anonymous, Psalm 18 is a song of David the king of Israel, and during his reign he was indeed a man of war. In this psalm, David is acknowledging Yahweh (the LORD), as the One who delivered him from all of his enemies and gave him the victory.

Today, we are in spiritual warfare, and according to Hebrews 2:10, Yeshua is revealed as the captain of our salvation (our Leader and Commander).

It is He who conquered the enemies of sin and death. And the One who declared us believers, as more than conquerors in Romans 8:37, because of His love for us.

In Ephesians 6:10-18, the Apostle Paul wrote to the church in Ephesus, concerning the armor of God, and how to dress for the battle.

God continues to be a shield of protection for all who put their faith and trust in Him through Jesus Christ. His promises are an anchor for our souls, and His love will never fail!

His Word is a sure foundation (rock), and a defense (fortress) against the attacks of the enemy (the devil and his demons).

We can say, like King David said, in Psalm 18:2, "The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; My God, my strength in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold."

He will protect us from our adversary, the devil, who walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour." 1 Peter 5:8

Psalm 18:2 describes God with several protective images:

“The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,
my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge,
my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” (Psalm 18:2)

David wrote this psalm after God delivered him from his enemies, including King Saul (cf. 2 Samuel 22). As a soldier, David knew the value of a shield. A shield stood between the warrior and the incoming arrows or blows of the enemy. When David calls the Lord “my shield,” he is saying that God Himself stands between him and ultimate harm.

This truth still applies to believers today in several practical ways.

1. God shields us by giving refuge in times of fear.

David repeatedly speaks of taking refuge in the Lord.

“In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?” (Psalm 56:4)

When fears arise, believers rely on God as a shield by turning to Him in prayer and trust rather than being controlled by anxiety. God does not always remove every danger immediately, but He protects the heart with His presence and promises.

We can pray:

"Lord Jesus, who dost love me,
Oh, spread Thy wings above me
And shield me from alarm!
Though evil would assail me,
Thy mercy will not fail me:
I rest in Thy protecting arm." – Hymn by Paul Gerhardt, 1607-1676

"What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee" is a well-known Bible verse from Psalm 56:3 (King James Version), where King David expresses reliance on God during times of fear and adversity. It serves as a reminder to actively choose trust in God as a, refuge, rather than being overwhelmed by fear.

2. God shields us from spiritual attack.

The Bible teaches that believers face spiritual opposition. Paul uses the same imagery when he writes:

“In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one.” (Ephesians 6:16)

Faith in God’s character and promises acts like a shield against temptations, accusations, and discouragement. When believers trust what God has said, the enemy’s “fiery darts” lose their power.
