Paul sure is confident. In a song based on Romans 8:37-39, the phrase "I am sure" is used 24 times! That includes 7 times of "Oh, I am sure!"

Dear Anonymous, I believe Paul's assurance that nothing would ever separate him from God's love came from his personal relationship with Jesus Christ. The apostle was a prisoner for preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ. He endured being persecuted for the sake of Christ. He was fully persuaded that God's love for him was an everlasting love and would never fail.

Paul first asks this question in Romans 8:35, "Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?" I believe he asked it in order that he might answer it for his audience. But he says that nothing bad can separate us from the love of Christ. Then in Romans 8:38-39 he answers the question. It's security that Paul is talking about -- ours! That and our secure destiny (if you are a believer). It is the nature of the love of Christ and the love of God. Once we have accepted His love, we're in. God does not withdraw His love. Think of it this way. What did Paul say in v. 32? "He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall He not also with him freely give us all things?" It's the nature of God’s love -- Paul has just argued that God did not spare His own Son (Romans 8:32). If God gave the most precious gift possible, He will not withdraw His love. Divine love is not fickle or conditional like human love.
