What does "By His stripes we are healed" mean? Isaiah 53:4-5 NIV

I.e. What does "by his WOUNDS we are healed" mean?

Isaiah 53:4-5
4 Surely he took up our iniquities and carried our sorrow, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by Him and afflicted.
5 But he was pierced for our transgressions,
    he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
    and by his wounds we are healed.

The physical suffering and bodily injuries that Jesus experienced during the process of arresting Him and putting Him to death were punishments that should rightly be (and have been, since the commission of the first sin in Genesis 3) inflicted by God on every human being because of our universal inherent sinfulness. (And, even beyond those injuries, was the spiritual separation from God the Father that Jesus underwent on our behalf, as when He cried from the cross, "My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?")

However, because of the love of Christ and God the Father for humans, and their desire for us to be able to dwell with Them eternally (rather than being eternally separated from Them in Hell) the punishment and disfigurement (including, and as represented by, the "stripes" Jesus received through flogging) that Jesus underwent "healed" us by making it possible for Christ's righteousness to be vicariously imputed to us through faith on our part, so that, through that faith in Him, we may be forgiven of our sin and allowed into God's presence.
