The context of Romans 8:37 is persecution. Read a little bit above it and that becomes clear. And so the answer to what we are and what happens during persecution is clear - We are conquerors! We are victorious! Nobody can separate us from the love of Christ! Our faith is strong and not destroyed! Even through trials, through tribulations, through the worst crap that this world can throw at us - we are more than conquerors through it because we have Christ supporting us.
"More than a conqueror"! Simply put, everything we'll ever go through, trials & tribulations, sickness, grief, all of the "human" experience. Jesus took it all into Himself, His battle, He conquered! As we are now in Christ, we are simply waliking in His footsteps, resting in HIS finished works at the cross. We're "more than" because He is "Greater than"!
We are more than conquerors; not only over sin and Satan, but the world, the reproaches, afflictions, and persecutions of it; which they cheerfully and courageously undergo, insomuch that they are not only conquerors, but "more than conquerors." -- Gill's Exposition of the Entire Bible Ro 8:37 points to Christ’s death as the great demonstration of His love: cf. Galatians 2:20, also Revelation 12:11. --Expositor's Greek Testament Bengel's Gnomen Romans 8:37. Ὑπερνικῶμεν, we are more than conquerors) We have strength not only equal and sufficient, but far more than sufficient for overcoming the preceding catalogue of evils: and not even shall the catalogue of evils, which follows, injure us, because Christ, because God is greater than all: (33 Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth. 34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. 37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. 38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.) Don’t you believers just love this hymn by Connie? More Than Conquerors Through the cleansing blood of the dying Lamb, Through the pow’r of grace and the precious Name, Through the light that beams from the Morning Star, More than conquerors, conquerors we are. Refrain More than conquerors, more than conquerors, Through the cleansing blood of the dying Lamb, More than conquerors! More than conquerors, Through the pow’r of grace and the precious Name. Who shall sever us from the Savior’s love, Or shall blot our names from Life’s book above? Neither present things, nor the things to come, Shall defeat our souls of the heav’nly home. Refrain More than conquerors! There our Captain stands, While our names are graven upon His hands; Though the pow’rs of darkness against us frown, We shall win the fight, and shall wear the crown. Refrain So, how do I get to be more than a conqueror? It’s through the light that beams from the Morning Star (Jesus). It’s through the cleansing blood of the dying Lamb (Jesus). It’s through the power of grace and the precious Name of Jesus!
