Jesus was a man who lived 2000 years ago. He claimed to be God in the flesh, was killed because of this claim, then proved it was true by raising himself from the dead.
Some say that Jesus was just a good man. Well he was that. Some say that He was a prophet. He was that too. But what did Jesus say? He said John 14:6-7 "I am the Way, The Truth and The Life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him." In this and other places Jesus said that he is the son of God and equivalent with God. So, he was either Who he said he was or a mad man. But can a mad man heal the sick? Can a mad man give sight to the blind? Can a mad man raise the dead? I guess it is plain that Jesus is who he said he was! So to answer your question, Jesus was the Son of God who appeared to us in the land of Israel some 2000 years ago to be a sacrifice for our sins. John 3: 16-17 For God so loved the world that He gave his only be gotten Son so that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life. God did not send His Son to condemn the the world but that the world might be saved through Him. " He was born to an earthly mother by the name of Mary from the lineage of David and was adopted by a man named Joseph also from the lineage of David who took Mary as his wife. There are many things written about Him and his purpose recorded in the Bible as well as writings from non biblical sources.
To know the real historical Jesus, all one needs to do is read the Gospels. The real historical Jesus is the second member of the Trinity, He was born of a virgin and is the author of all living things. He lived a perfect, sinless life and loved you enough to pay the penalty for your sin. He was crucified on the cross, and then resurrected three days later, conquering both sin and death. Jesus is currently sitting at the right hand of God, awaiting His final return where He will judge all mankind, bring heaven down to earth, and redeem and restore both man and creation.
Jesus is, not was, and He is, as the question asserts, an historical person. Simple and plain, Jesus is the only begotten Son of the living God (John 1:18, Hebrews 11:17, John 3:16, 1John 4:9, John 3:18, John 1:14, Psalm 2:7, Acts 13:33, Hebrews 5:5). He is Savior of the world (1John 4:14, 2Pet 2:20, John 4:42, Isaiah 43:11, John 3:17, 1Tim 2:3, John 12:47, Acts 5:31, 2Peter 3:18). He is our King. The Lord is our Judge, The Lord is our Lawgiver, The Lord is our King; He will save us (Isaiah 33:22). Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord (Psalm 150:6).
Jesus Christ is the only begotten Son of God. In Him was life and His life was the light of men. Believing in Him brings eternal life and transformation. He is the model of humility and holiness. His name is a threat to the unseen forces, that at the mere mention of His name they tremble and fall. All who believe in Him are never disappointed. He is the image of the invisible God and the creator of all things, both in heaven, on earth and under the earth.
The story of Jesus is the greatest story ever told. How God sent His own son down from heaven who lived a perfect sinless life, went to the cross to die for the sins of the whole world, First John 2:2, then rose from the dead on the third day to prove who He was. Then made a statement. John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that WHOSOEVER, believeth in Him, should not perish, but have everlasting life by faith alone. Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, and we all sin, First John 1:8, and we all die, but the GIFT of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. He paid the sin debt of every man woman and child on earth who would accept Him as their savior. We are all born sinners. We had no way to pay our debt. Jesus paid the sin debt and set us free. No longer condemned. John 3:18. The last thing Jesus said, "IT IS FINISHED." That is an accounting term meaning paid in full. Our sin debt was paid so we do not have to go to hell to pay for our sins. He took the punishment we deserve that was accepted by His Father God, so we are no longer condemned to hell.
