I remember my daughter who is now 56 at about age 10 asked our pastor this same question. His answer was that believing in Jesus and accepting his commandments was only path to salvation and that people who died before the crucifixion were saved by believing than He would come. We are saved by believing that he did come. This was a somewhat simple answer, but satisfied her at time and still helps me to understand that Jesus is the Way for All.
