Paraclete means an advocate, helper, or comforter, and in Christian theology, it specifically refers to the Holy Spirit. 

What "Paraclete" Means in Scripture

The term Paraclete comes from the Greek word paraklētos, which Jesus used in John 14–16. It describes the Holy Spirit's role toward believers. The word carries several meanings: Helper, Advocate, Comforter, Counselor, and One who comes alongside. Each of these reflects a different aspect of the Spirit's work, and Scripture shows all of them operating in the life of God's people.

The Spirit as Helper (John 14:16)

Jesus promises "another Helper," meaning one who continues His work among His followers. The Spirit strengthens believers, supports them in weakness, and empowers them to live in obedience. This help is not occasional; it is continual, because the Spirit abides with believers forever.

The Spirit as Advocate (John 15:26; Romans 8:26–27)

An advocate stands beside someone to speak on their behalf. The Spirit intercedes for believers, expressing what they cannot articulate. Romans 8 shows the Spirit praying according to God's will, representing the believer before God with perfect understanding. The Spirit also testifies to Christ, guiding believers into truth.

The Spirit as Comforter (John 14:18, 26)

Jesus says He will not leave His followers as orphans. The Spirit as Counsellor (John 16:13)

This includes conviction of sin, clarity in righteousness, and discernment in judgment. The Spirit teaches, corrects, and forms the believer's understanding so that their life aligns with God's will.

The Spirit as One Who Comes Alongside (Galatians 5:16–18)

The Spirit walks with believers, enabling them to overcome the flesh and bear spiritual fruit. This companionship is practical: He leads, restrains, empowers, and shapes the believer's daily conduct. Walking in the Spirit means living under His influence rather than the impulses of the flesh.
