We talk directly to God. He hears us because of Jesus. The Holy Spirit will respond to our talk. The best example is humbling ourselves in prayer. "God (or Father), I love you. I'm so glad you came into my life. I trust you, Lord, yet I often need reassurance. I know you are always there. Speak to me, Father, about (whatever you need reassurance about). Thank You, Lord, for hearing my prayer, in Jesus' Name, Amen." Now go on about your day as the Holy Spirit responds. (He will only respond when you get out of the way... you can't moan and groan because you don't receive an immediate answer... just let go and let God). Once He responds, you can respond with "Thank You. I love you. You really blessed me." I often relax into gentle laughter when He so simply and Spiritually answers.
The Trinity is never in competition with one another because they all work together as one. They are one, God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit. ONE BEING, however they all work various facets of the union individually yet collectively. And their actions or movement between each other are not inferior to one another. Remember the word states that Jesus did not count it as robbery to be equal to God. Philippians 2:6. God didn’t get offended when Jesus came to redeem us because the word clearly states that “to wit God was in Christ reconciling the world unto himself” 2 Corinthians 5:19. The relationship of the Trinity is so miraculous and profound and oh so simple. When I come before the throne of God boldly “let us come before the throne of God boldly Hebrews 4:16. I can only do that in the Spirit because God and Jesus are one and they are a Spirit. And because they are a spirit we can only worship them in Spirit and in truth. John 14:23 “Jesus and the Father will come and take up residence inside of us.” So to answer your question as to if you can talk to the Holy Spirit directly, YES! He lives inside of you, if you have accepted Jesus as your personal Savior! Now how the prayer is directed to God is interceded and or filtered through the Lord Jesus on your behalf.
