Jesus was circumcised 8 days after his birth, following customs, in a synagogue. This ceremony is called the "brit milah", followed by a feast called "seudat mitzvah". We can assume they invited friends and relatives, making it a semi-private event. (Luke 2:21) After giving birth, Mary has to perform a ritual called "mikveh", a full immersion into water to regain ritual purity. Without this, she can not enter the Temple, where she needs to be for the next ritual, the "pidyon haben". (Luke 2:22) The "pidyon haben" is the consecration of the firstborn male to the Lord. This ceremony is performed in the Temple at least 30 days after the baby is born. Joseph and Mary offered a pair of turtledoves or young pigeons, according to the Law. (Luke 2:23-24)
